Alan Peter Whitfield asked:

Feelings of dread…constant worrying…fear of ‘what might happen’…

These are all descriptions of how someone might be feeling if they are suffering anxiety. Anxiety sufferers often suffer anxiety without even knowing (for years on occasion) that it is actually a form of Anxiety, and that there is treatment available. Feelings of ‘going mad’ or ‘breaking down’ are often common. The education of what Anxiety is, needs to be out there for people to know, recognise and treat anxiety.

So, what exactly is it?

Anxiety is a body’s response to a given stimuli and has been instilled in humans since time began. Make no mistake, we wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for some form of anxiety within us. It is the sense that something might be happening, preparing your body for an event or situation, it is that butterfly feeling before a speech or a public situation. But Anxiety as an illness is what people describe as anxiety – when the reaction of a situation surpasses the actual situation. A feeling of intense dread when in a public place, for fear of a bad situation emerging, often without any real basis.

There are many types of anxiety, and are categorised into their symptoms.
OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Panic Disorder
Agoraphobia
PTSD – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
GAD – Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

In the first instance if you feel that you or someone you know may be suffering from anxiety of any type, I would STRONGLY suggest that you contact your GP in the first instance. Yes there are far more methods of combating anxiety than with the ‘medical model’ alone, and quite often to far greater success. BUT, there may be a physical cause for your symptoms, and a quick call to your GP can rule out anything else.

For further info please go to http://www.managinganxiety.co.uk

Caffeinated Content for WordPress
