How long do I have to keep taking anxiety medication until it goes away?

John B asked:

I’ve been taking anxiety medication for 3 years now and I wanted to know if my anxiety will ever go away. Everytime I try to stop taking it I get very anxious causing me to seem socially akward but on it I’m just fine. I’m just tired of letting a little white pill dictate my life.

okay first, your medication will not dictate your life.
mental disorders never go away because there isn’t a cure.
i understand why you wouldn’t wanna keep taking it forever
cause i’ve been taking stimulants for 10 years since 2nd grade and i’ve been taking a mood stabilizer for a year. i know both will never go away and i just have to **** it up…and so do you.

so here’s two options, ya either stick with it
    because obviously it helps you
or you just stop taking it and have problems.

im not trying to be mean, cause i seriously know how
frustrating it is, but till there is a cure, keep taking them.
cause seriously, if you already know you’re fine on meds
    then why stop?

you cant just stop those types of meds, if you truly want to be off of them, you have to gradually reduce the dose and frequency under the control of your doctor.
you may be experiencing tolerance to a drug which is different from addicition, meaning you need higher doses to get the same result.
Unfortunatley, some anxiety issues require lifetime medication. Panic disorder especially. some are easier to get off than others.
my personal and profesional opinion is that if it works, keep taking it.
you can work with your healthcare professional on behavior modification in the attempts to reduce and eventually get off the med.
    good luck and take care

It may never go away. Think of it this way, if you had to take a little white pill in order for your blood pressure to remain “normal”, would you feel the same way? Even though most people don’t think about it, there still is a stigma related to the so-called “mental health illnesses”. Just because anxiety is labeled as a “mental health” issue at this time, doesn’t mean that you’re “nuts” and that you have control over your illness. Anxiety is symptoms that you feel in your body (increased heart rate, shaking, overall nervousness, GI problems, etc) due to chemical imbalances in the brain. You didn’t cause yourself to have anxiety and you cannot cause yourself to not have it. If the medication is working, then keep taking it!

you have to keep taking ur medication untill you learn other ways to manage ur anxiety, its hard and takes a long time because it sounds like you have a chemical imbalence, but with therapy you can still learn

i know how much it ***** to let pills govern ur life

Are you getting help for the cause of the anxiety as well as taking pills? The pills just help whilst you sort yourself out. When you are sorted with controlling your anxiety yourself then you wont need the pills to dictate your life.

Until you sort the cause of and your reaction to your anxiety then you wont be able to come off them anxiety free because the anxiety is still there underneath.

Treat the cause then you will be anxiety and pill free.

Until then the little white pill will dictate your life…maybe deep down you think it is easier that way?…. just a thought.

    Good Luck

As long as you keep taking that pill it’ll never go away. All medicine is processed to calm any kind of pain but they do NOT cure. You should try going to a naturopathic doctor so he can give you natural herbs to heal. My husband suffered from anxiety and the only way to go is:
1.-Eat as natural food as you can
    2.-Sleep well
    3.-Do some exercise
4.-Exchange your medicine to natural herbs
    5.Think positive
    6.Love yourself
    7.ENJOY LIFE
This method is much more healthier and it does work, it takes time but it works!
    Good LUCK!!!!

It sounds like your anxiety dictates your life much more than your anxiety meds do. You may need them for a long time. Yes, it can be annoying & frustrating to take meds, but at least they work for you. I know people for whom meds don’t work very well…so, what’s dictating their lives?

Work with a therapist on learning how to understand your anxiety; how & what trigger it & then you can learn how to cope with it better,

    Good luck to you.
